Origin and Mission
Founded in 2016, Replit's core product is browser-based IDE software, and in 2022 it went live with GhostWriter, an AI programming assistant in which users can develop, compile, run, and host applications in over 50 languages. The product is considered the easiest place for beginners to get started with programming, while also allowing more experienced programmers to test and build applications.
Replit's mission is to enable the next generation of a billion people to develop online, giving everyone the ability to create software and get rich doing it. The company believes that in the modern world, the ability to write code should be as common as the ability to write a paper. It wants to lead the shift from a stacked model of software creation to a networked model and create the world's first massively distributed and collaborative operating system. Currently there are only ten million developers in the world, and more than 900 million of the future billion developers are expected to be non-professionals doing lightweight development. Empowered by AI, the code generation ability in this operating system has made a qualitative leap, and the ability of natural language to realize business logic has greatly increased.
